The question has always been, when can you wear white skirts? There used to be a fashion rule which stated that it was not “proper” to wear white pants, white shoes, white dresses, white coats, or white skirts in between Labor Day and Memorial Day. This has changed over the recent years, however, many women still adhere to these rules. The bottom line is to do and wear what you want when you want.
If you live in a cold climate with extreme differences in temperature between winter and summer, then this rule seems logical. Who wants to wear white pants or skirts when there is enough white snow outside that lasts for several months? Usually in these climates, the clothing stores aim more towards the winter whites and ivories for winter. There are still many cold weather white clothing available too.
If you live a moderate to warm climate throughout the year with little temperature fluctuations, instead having a more constant comfortable temperature, then white bottoms will be fine for you year-round. Also, if you live in very hot climates, then by all means, wear white year round. Wearing white makes you feel a lot cooler, because white reflects the sun’s rays instead of absorbing them such as the color black does.
It used to be a rule that all women abided by, but this just no longer holds true. Many older women still see the wearing of white dresses, white skirts, white shoes, and white pants or shorts after Labor Day and before Memorial Day as being a fashion faux-pas. In this day and age, if you have a white skirt or dress you absolutely love, then by all means where it if you want, but I would recommend wearing it without matching white shoes. Go for a neutral tan or brown shoe.
The reason this white-wearing rule has stood so long is that white clothing tends to be warm weather clothing. For example, there are white capris, white shorts, white summer dresses, and white skirts – but most of these are targeted in light, cool fabrics that you wouldn’t want to wear in the winter. Does this mean all white clothing is summer clothing? Absolutely not. There are many beautiful long-sleeved shirts, white wool skirts, white wool winter coats, and white sweaters that are sold each year which are obviously not intended for summer use. So, when can you wear white skirts? The answer is whenever you want, it’s entirely up to you. Personally, I prefer to wear winter white or ivory in the winter, but I get sick of the snow in my yard after about a month.
White skirts are a wonderful addition to have in your closet during the summer months, or just to have in your closet all year if you live in a warm enough climate. They are as versatile as a black skirt, but can more easily be worn with flesh-toned or brown sandals. Of course, you can pair white skirts with white shoes, but this look must be carefully done as not to look too overdone.
In conclusion, a white skirt is a great choice for anyone. There are a variety of styles available that will not show your underwear. If you are still weary of your unmentionables showing then having some flesh-toned or tan underwear can really be a nice addition to your wardrobe. There are also a wide variety of styles to suit every body type and every height. There’s nothing cuter than a white mini skirt in the summer with a pastel tank and flip-flops or an elegant long white wool skirt with tall black or brown boots in the winter. A white skirt is a must-have for any woman.
